How They Began: In 1905, the Earl of Dundonald from Scotland invented a "tilting teapot" for the optimum brewing of tea. The good Earl, exhibiting typical Scottish humility, christened it the SYP teapot, which he said stood for "Simple... Yet Perfect." Actually, I agree with him, and it isn't just because I'm half Scottish myself. --Bert

How They Work: Put leaves on the built-in infuser shelf, fill with hot water, and lay the teapot on its back. As the tea darkens to the desired strength, first tilt the pot to drain all the liquid from the leaves, then stand the teapot vertically. With the water no longer bathing the leaves, the brew does not become bitter. Simple... yet effective. |

How to Get Them: We are now having these marvelous teapots custom made in China in order to keep the price reasonable (see below). A similar (but not quite as nice) version is available in Germany but at over twice the price! You may also occasionally see an antique one, as Wedgwood made a decorative version until about 1930. Very pretty, but they now sell for over $350 each! |
