At the turn of the century, Regina and other companies made beautiful disc style music boxes by the thousands. But sadly, with growing competition from Thomas Edison’s phonograph, however, none of them survived the Depression years. Nowadays, if you are fortunate enough to find an old antique disk music box for sale and it is still in good playing condition, expect to pay very dearly to acquire it.

Not wanting to let the art form die out, about twenty five years ago a Vermont craftsman named Dwight Porter decided to make the large disc music boxes once again. Using Regina as a principal model; he painstakingly reproduced the boxes in their entirety, from the clockwork spring mechanism to the finely machined musical combs. The result is a music box that fills the room with music in a way not widely experienced since the turn of the century.

The boxes themselves feature some of the finest woodwork you are likely to ever see; with intricate inlays of rosewood, white holly, burl elm, burl walnut, satinwood, tulip wood and mahogany. Classic designs depicting musical motifs, pastoral scenes and lovers from the Baroque period adorn the exterior of the boxes, which we feel you will consider a work of art in their own right.

Dwight Porter has spent many years reproducing the large copper song discs and now has over 900 titles available in the larger 15-1/2" size and 300 plus in the smaller 12-1/4" and 11" formats (with more being produced every day). In addition to playing beautifully on the Porter music boxes, these discs also work well on the Regina and Polyphon boxes.
