At the turn of the century, Regina and other companies made beautiful disc style music boxes by the thousands. But sadly, with growing competition from Thomas Edison’s phonograph, however, none of them survived the Depression years. Nowadays, if you are fortunate enough to find an old antique disk music box for sale and it is still in good playing condition, expect to pay very dearly to acquire it.

Swan Elite II
Even the smallest of the Porter boxes, the Swan II (image at right), fills a room with beautiful music. In fact, this is the box that we use at Tea & Tomes for background ambiance. Measuring 18" by 18" by 10" high the Swan plays the 12-1/4" discs. The Swan II has dual music combs, each with 54 notes, for a total of 108 teeth and full range over four octaves. The spring wound mechanism will play for about 15 minutes after every winding, although the shut off lever will also stop the machine after a single disc rotation.

Victorian Baroque
A beauty in every sense of the word, the Baroque Limited Edition is the same size as the majority of the Regina machines, playing the 15-1/2" disc. The instrument contains two of the 76 note combs, for a total of 152 teeth with a range over five octaves. A gentle winding provides about 20 minutes of continual music, although a shut off lever can also be used to limit play. Production of the Limited Edition series will discontinue after 500 boxes are created, making it a true collector’s piece. Size of this machine is approximately 24" wide, 22" deep and 12" high.
