The gurgling jug is a traditional handicraft first produced in England by potteries located in and around Dartmouth, Devonshire. In the late 1950's a customized pair of gurgling jugs were presented to her majesty, Queen Elizabeth, and ever since that time collectors worldwide have sought after the jugs.

When filled with liquid, air is trapped in the fish's tail. As that liquid is poured out again, the air is gradually released and produces a surprisingly loud and rather wonderful gurgling or "glug-glug" sound. Because of this, these fish-shaped pitchers are also often referred to as glug glug jugs. The larger the jug, the louder and deeper the glug.

Over the years, gurgling jugs have been produced in a number of sizes and shapes. Although they are most often used to hold water at the dinner table, custom versions have been produced as advertising pieces for beer and gin companies. Of course, any beverage at all will produce the same lovely sounds, including lemonade, juices, soda, and wine. Many people use their jugs as flower vases when not in use as pitchers.

At Virtual Tea, we are proud to report that we hold exclusive representation for the USA market for the only Dartmouth pottery still making this traditional art form. Jugs come in four sizes; the mini size is nearly 4 inches tall and holds 1/4 cup of liquid, the medium is about 7 inches tall and holds about a pint of liquid, and the large is 9 inches tall and holds about a quart.

Solid colors (see photo above) include white, cream (while supplies last), yellow, blue and green. The multicolored fish (see photo at left) is hand painted by artists at the pottery and then re-fired, sealing in the brilliant majolica-like coloration. As such, no two pieces are ever quite alike.

In England, gurgling jugs have become a traditional house warming or wedding gift. Why a gurgling jug? Well, perhaps it is because anyone starting a new household needs a pitcher or two for their table. Or perhaps it is a realization that in this world, a gift can be practical and still maintain a touch of whimsy. Here in the USA, giving a gurgling jug has the added advantage of being totally unique. For your own table or as a one of a kind gift for a friend or relative, catch yourself a fish pitcher gurgling jug!
